Are you Prepared for a Hurricane

Time to Get Ready...

Hurricane season begins on June 1 and lasts through November 30. Storms affecting North Carolina peak in early to mid-September. Hurricanes can be life-threatening and can cause serious property-threatening hazards such as flooding, storm surge, high speed winds and tornadoes. Long-term power outages, evacuations, property destruction and debris are just some of the effects that can result from the onset of nature's fury. We cannot control the weather; but we can prepare and discuss plans for continued operations and mitigating damages. It is important to prepare for hurricane season each year with the appropriate training as well as an Emergency Response Plan. Developing an emergency plan begins with an understanding of what can happen before, during and after a storm.

A few helpful tips are outlined below:

  • Conduct a risk assessment in advance
  • Consider the current plan that is in place and any amendments/improvements that can be made
  • Decide how much you want to invest in planning beyond what is required by regulations

Back To School Supply Giveaway

Monroe Housing Authority partnered with The City of Monroe Parks and Recreation to give away school supplies for the upcoming school year.

Many children received bookbags and supplies and parents were able to receive resources and information from community partners including South Piedmont Community College, Staffmark Staffing Agency, Monroe Police Department, Heart & Home Realty, and Angel Shoes.

Your Guide to Back-to-School Safety

Taking the bus for the first time is a big step for your child. Help your kids get a gold star in bus safety by following these tips:

  • Walk with your kids to the bus stop and wait with them until it arrives. Tell kids to stand at least three giant steps back from the curb as the bus approaches and board the bus one at a time.
  • Teach kids to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting off and never to walk behind the bus.
  • If your child needs to cross the street after exiting the bus, he or she should take five giant steps in front of the bus, make eye contact with the bus driver and cross when the driver indicates it's safe.
  • Teach kids to look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.

Have a happy and safe school year!
